The Baux de Provence

This medieval citadel surrounded by fields of olive trees and white rocks is considered as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Located in the region of Provence, in the south of the country, near the city of Arles, Les Baux-de-Provence today lives for tourism. Its less than 500 residents receive 1, 2 million tourists per year. Houses of clear stones are mixed with the rock of the hill where they are. At the highest point, the Castle des Baux guarantees the view over the Valley of the Inferno, which extends around with its green vegetation.

Stairs, stone alleys, small gardens that seem to leave the rock, galleries, craft shops and discrete restaurants give the charm of the almost always sunny spot. Other gems are the Roman church of Saint-Vincent and the houses of the Renaissance period, while the Louis-Jou Foundation conserves works by the painters Rembrant and Goya. With a dry climate and high summer temperatures, the place is rich in bauxite, a mineral needed to produce aluminum, but the olives and good Provencal wine are the local products that share the visitors' luggage.
