The "Venice of the Alps" with its canals, bridges and narrow streets of the historic center is the first stop towards the prestigious ski resorts of the French Alps. Not far from Switzerland and Italy, Annecy is at the foot of the Semnoz mountain range and has grown the banks of its large, clear-water lake. The former residence of the Counts of Geneva preserves castles and monuments that tell its history.
It is known for its international animated film festival, which occupies the city with outdoor projections and major releases every year during the summer. But it is in winter that Annecy finds all its charm, the cold climate and the mountains create the ideal environment to try a tasty tartiflette, potatoes and bacon au gratin with Reblochon cheese, or a real savoyarde fondue, a specialty copied worldwide.
