At the top of a hill on the Cure River, little Vézelay attracted pilgrims from all over the world for its relics attributed to Mary Magdalene. The small village of less than 500 inhabitants has formed around a Benedictine monastery, built around the year 858. The Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine and the hill are inscribed in the list of World Heritage of Humanity and the place receives the seal of one of the most beautiful French villages. Discovering its history through its medieval lanes and its pilgrims is a fascinating experience not only for those brought by religion. In the house where Romain Rolland lived, Nobel Prize for literature, the Zervos Museum preserves a collection of modern art with more than 800 pieces made up of Christian Zervos, for decades editor of an important French publication of art.

This mystical place, one of the starting points for the road to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, has been home to vineyards since Roman times. Prosperous in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, they today retain the appellation of controlled origin Bourgogne Vézelay and are engaged in the production of Chardonnay, Melon and Pinot noir. The proximity of the Morvan Regional Natural Park is an invitation to outdoor sports. Kayaking, hiking, rafting, fishing, horseback riding and ballooning are some of the activities suggested in the area.
